Presiento — by Aitana ft. Morat.

It's a song by a Spanish singer in collab of a Colombian group that I like, but I didn't add the song to my playlist until recently.

Unsurprisingly, it reminds me of Zutara — not only because its video depicts a mermaid-themed play 😅 — it's also because the song talks about assumptions one person has about the other in regards of relationships, and is afraid of getting their heart broken by that person. The one line that fully labeled it a Zutara song for me was this one:

"Presiento que serás de esos errores, de esos que estoy dispuesto a cometer."

It means:

"I feel you will be one of those mistakes, those that I am willing commit."

😂😂😂 No, but seriously, I brought that to myself. It's on me.

It's something that came up when I was planning the future of my Avatar!Zuko AU, or the way I call it: The AU Where Characters Obviously Worthy of More Screentime Finally Are Done Justice.

I don't know what could be considered too spoilery for my story, but let's just say I want bisexuals to be bisexual together 🤷🏽‍♀️

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)

It's mostly book fandoms, where I kinda stick around to learn a bit about the summary and the aesthetic of the books before deciding to read them. My dashboard has been filled with If We Were villains, Warcross, the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Beach Read, and One Last Stop content lately.

There's also Julie and The Phantoms. I haven't gotten to watch it yet because I'm still kinda fond (and heartbroken) over the Brazilian version.

The Haikyuu fandom, I suppose.

Chapter Three: one can live with the other, one can live without the other

Now, in this part of my analysis, we are gonna take a look at how a redemption arc can work in relation to the enemies to lovers trope. To sum it up, a character:

can have a redemption arc without needing an enemies to lovers relationship;

can have a redemption arc and an enemies to lovers relationship NOT connected to it;

can have a redemption arc after falling in love with one of the good guys, therefore also starting the possibility of an enemies to lovers relationship.

I will make an example of each of these three possibilities, and I will take all three of them from FT to make it easier to compare them, so from now on this chapter is ALL FT spoiler!

Can have a redemption arc without needing an enemies to lovers relationship: Laxus.

I think we all understand this: Laxus tries to conquer the Guild in the Fairy Tail Battle arc, but understand that what he did was wrong. However, he gets banished because of what he has done and goes on a journey (that we don’t see in the main show). He comes back on Tenrojima, shows he understood his mistakes, helps and apologize and, after some drama, is forgiven, although he will drag along the way the weight of what he did. Pretty short, pretty simple, but works. Now, as we can all see, Laxus doesn’t have a confirmed love interest (the show even joked about it!), therefore no enemies to lovers here.

So far so good.

Can have a redemption arc and an enemies to lovers relationship NOT connected to it: Gajeel.

Now, here it’s where it gets tricky: Gajeel starts as a bad guy from Phantom Lord, gets defeated, is given a second chance by Makarov, and from there starts to earn trust and respect from the Guild. At the same time, he starts hanging out with Levy, who he previously hanged to a tree (the from enemies part), gets to know her and eventually falls in love. So, he has both a redemption arc and an enemies to lovers relationship, however the two of them are NOT related. If you remove Levy from the picture, Gajeel’s redemption arc still works perfectly fine.

True, many people started shipping them here:

but here their feelings were anything but romantic: Levy was scared of him and he was too ashamed to face her. Pay really close attention to this point, it’s the core of my argument.

Can have a redemption arc after falling in love with one of the good guys, therefore also starting the possibility of an enemies to lovers relationship: Juvia.

Now, let’s see if you can see the difference between Juvia and Gajeel. Juvia also starts as an enemy from Phantom, and gets defeated by Gray. However, during their fight she falls in love with him (let’s say it like that for the sake of saving time), and therefore decides to get close to him, ends up seeing Fairy Tail and realizing what it really means to belong to a guild, and tries to earn the trust of the Guild in order to join it, effectively starting a really short redemption arc (two scenes: her fight with Lucy during the Tower or Heaven and her sacrifice for Cana during Fairy War). At the same time, she starts getting close to Gray, starting the enemies to lovers relationship. Now, can you see the difference?

If you remove Levy from Gajeel’s redemption, it still works; if you remove Gray, however, Juvia’s redemption doesn’t even start. However, this is really hard to spot, since Levy DID help Gajeel grow and change, she just wasn’t the starting point of his redemption.

Now, is any of these three redemption less good than the other? IMO, absolutely not. They just tell different messages: Laxus’ story is about understanding other people opinions and decisions and learning to express yourself and your feelings in an healthy way (AKA: shoot lightnings only at real threats, NOT at your companions, you usually talk to those), Gajeel’s is about learning that each person is valuable for their uniqueness and that your strength can be used to enhance and help others, rather than diminish and oppress them, and Juvia’s is about how friendship and love can help you and give you hope, even when you have given up, turning you in a better person that can continue spreading that hope. And different messages requires different techniques in order to be effective: having Juvia learning about love (specifically romantic love) and how it can change you it’s quite harder if you don’t give her a romantic interest; at the same time, Laxus having a love interest would take away time from his personal development, because you’d have to use that time to solidify the relationship, rather than the character as an individual.

And now, with all of this in mind, we are ready for the probably best redemption arc ever: Zuko.
